How can the process of documenting (informal) professional development (pd) activities be utilized to encourage undergoing further training, voluntarily and continuously? A Germany-wide survey was conducted to examine the present situation. Subsequently, a system which supports the documentation of pd activities was set up at the library of the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld based on the e-learning platform ILIAS. After one year, the results showed similar findings to those of the survey and the relevant literature: library assistants participate less frequently in pd activities; a documentation is seen as added value; and employees holding a temporary contract are especially interested in a certificate as a reward.
