Every library faces the challenge of using the available acquisition budget as efficiently and appropriately as possible in accordance with the respective library mission. A survey of 181 institutions shows that, in addition to the classic costs per download, a variety of other decision parameters also play an important role. There also is a strong interest in inter-library exchange which could facilitate and optimize the institution-specific definition of decision criteria. In view of the increasing complexity of licensing models, systematic and continuous content controlling – independent of the hectic year-end business – is an essential prerequisite for being able to make sound licensing decisions.
